Q&A with Jackson Aw of Mighty Jaxx ("Bad Apple" is "Best Resin" for #DesignerToyAwards2013)

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

The GOIN designed "Bad Apple" was crowned BEST RESIN at the recent 2013 Designer Toy Awards, and TOYSREVIL had a wee Q&A with Jackson Aw of Mighty Jaxx; the producers of this highly sought after collectible!

BAD-APPLES-DTA2013

TOYSREVIL: Congrats on the win! Was it something you had imagined would happen, with Mighty Jaxx?

JACKSON AW: Thanks Andy! When we heard of the DTA, we thought it is a pretty cool initiative for the toy community, but other than that, we did not work towards it as a goal. I think it is apparent that we devoted ourselves to creating works of art. That said, it is a pleasant surprise, largely because we are only 1 year old, and certainly gave us more confidence to pursue what we are doing.

TOYSREVIL: What do you think is the "sole reason" for Bad Apple's win?

JACKSON AW: I believe it is the fact that Bad Apple is so recognizable and people can relate to the art work done by GOIN. Also unlike some artworks, it is simple and people can understand it in one glance. It's really amazing how successful it is as when we started with the figure, the sole reason is that we want it on our desk, that's why we made it. I guess alot more people relate to it too and that's cool.

doupleparlour are "Breakthrough Artist" for #DesignerToyAwards2013

And the Winner(s) for BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST in this year's Designer Toy Awards, is DOUBLEPARLOUR! TOYSREVIL had a wee Q&A with the San Francisco-based husband and wife duo of Cassie and Ernie @ www.doubleparlour.com :)

TOYSREVIL: Congrats on the win! Was it something you both had imagined would happen? What are your thoughts on the win?

DOUBLEPARLOUR: We were so surprised! We didn't expect to win.....so many good artists in the breakthrough category. We feel so honored to have won, it is so awesome!!! And to get the opportunity to make a custom dp dunny for Kidrobot, we are pleased as punch!

TOYSREVIL: What/Who is/are your favoritest (single) piece of your work?

DOUBLEPARLOUR: It is always the next piece! It constantly evolves...but we do have some that we are partial too: Edith, Paulette, Sylvie (up top with the DTA trophy!) and Bog Ruffian (below).

TOYSREVIL: Describe WHO Doubleparlour is, to the uninitiated!

DOUBLEPARLOUR: Doubleparlour is Ernie and Cassandra Velasco. We are a husband and wife artistic collaboration living in San Francisco, CA. Doubleparlour came to life in November of 2007. Cassandra has a B.A. in Fine Art from Humboldt State University and Ernie is a self taught artist. We produce work in a variety of mediums; however, our primary focus is on making hand-formed resin sculptures. The work includes a broad range of characters in different emotional states; including alien monsters, animal hybrids, mutated humans, and anthropomorphic figures.

TOYSREVIL: How did the name "Doubleparlour" come about, actually?

DOUBLEPARLOUR: We live in a flat with a double parlour......we liked that the name represents two parts (double) and a parlour which is where one entertains. Which is what we do.....we want our characters to amuse, engage, and speak to the viewer.
